Spill Absorbent Granules
Absorbent granules are manufactured from a variety of materials, including clay, cellulose, recycled mineral products, and polymers. The material used directly influences how absorbent the granules are, their weight, how they can be disposed of, and their overall environmental profile.
Clay-based granules are commonly used for oil and fuel spills and are effective in these situations. However, when dealing with chemical spills, specialist absorbents such as super absorbent polymers (SAP) or chemical-specific products are often required to ensure safe and effective containment.
Once absorbent granules have been used, they must be disposed of correctly. If they have absorbed hazardous liquids, UK regulations require them to be treated and disposed of as hazardous waste. Granules are not reusable; after absorbing a spill they should be swept up and disposed of, particularly when hazardous substances are involved.
Proper storage is important to maintain effectiveness. Absorbent granules should be kept sealed in dry containers or bags, away from moisture and ignition sources. Storing them close to high-risk areas allows for quick deployment in the event of a spill.
Although absorbent granules do not have a traditional expiry date, their performance can deteriorate if they are exposed to moisture or contaminants during storage. Regular checks for clumping or reduced absorbency help ensure they remain effective when needed.
